Jan L. Mayes (She/her) is a self-help strategist, retired audiologist, and award-winning nonfiction author who uses Canadian spelling. She’s evolved her personal hyperacusis and tinnitus coping toolbox over the past 40 to 50 years.
Her true passion lies in writing weird, dark tales. A lifelong lover of reading horror, she specializes in flash fiction and short stories, eating cookies, and taking naps with her cats and rescue dog.
Current Projects
I’m working on my first novel, a dystopian cli-fi novel. I’m also writing more short stories including my first foray into zombies, and the long requested comeuppance chapter for Doctor Bell’s Tinnitus Terror Tales.
If you want to see how I’m doing, I post my coping strategies, current writing, plus lots of hot chocolate, pet, needlework, gardening and baking pics on BlueSky @thegrannyjan and my Instagram, @the_granny_jan.
Check out my new closed captioned TikTok @thegrannyjan and YouTube channels:
Messed up Storytime is the YouTube channel where I share my weird fiction and the odd poem. Yes, I’m reading my short stories out loud. Some are more *&#@%! up and horrifying than others. Don’t worry, kittens. Younger or more sensitive listeners or viewers can choose my Funny Stories playlist instead of Scary Stories.
My Safe Sound Science YouTube channel is where I’m sharing info on tinnitus and hyperacusis coping tools plus preventing noise-induced hearing health damage. This will include safer personal listening and legacy public health science limits. Currently so ignored by educators to researchers, that future generations face an early death with noise damaged brains, minds, bodies, and ears. The voices in my head keep saying, “Nobody cares, Jan. Nobody cares.” I keep telling myself, if it helps at least 1 person…
